Smog Inspection / Smog Check

California requires that most vehicles registered in the state to have a biennial smog emissions inspection or "smog check". The Department of Motor Vehicles will let you know, when they send you the registration renewal, if you need to get a new smog certificate. These certificated are good for 90 days after the inspection date. They are also required when you sell a vehicle.
